MORGAN BLOCK

Built during the Victorian era, Morgan Block merges two historic commercial buildings in the vibrant core of Downtown Victoria. In 1891, the edifice facing Douglas Street was one of the few commercial buildings to be owned and operated by a woman. Miss Margaret Doane’s tenants included a variety of merchants and proprietors – a grocer, an importer, a tailor, a tobacconist, a picture framer, a lodging house. Adjacent to the Doane Building and facing Johnson Street, the Watson & MacGregor Building housed a hardware and plumbing supply shop.

In 1927, Victoria city alderman William L. Morgan purchased the two buildings, which became known as Morgan Block. He and his wife Mary Ellen contributed actively to business, politics, and culture in Victoria throughout their lifetime. Today, William and Mary Ellen’s descendants uphold the Morgan family legacy by vowing to honour and restore the original buildings, and contribute to the revitalization of their beloved city.

Morgan Block, Downtown Victoria’s newest heritage condo development, unifies its storied past with its distinctive future and combines the best of extraordinary downtown living: classic architecture and contemporary details, urban vibrancy and secluded sanctuary, elegant residences and thriving storefronts.
